Where We Work

Latin America and Caribbean Program

Global Links currently works in nine of the poorest countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Collaborating with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization and the Ministries of Health in each country ensures that Global Links projects will make a lasting improvement in each country’s healthcare infrastructure.

A note on statistics:

All statistics come from the World Health Organization Global Health Observatory website. Unless otherwise noted, the figures are from 2008.

Infant Mortality Rate refers to the probability of an infant’s dying between birth and age one, per 1000 live births.

Maternal Mortality Rate is the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Due to the difficulty of gathering data on maternal mortality, which is defined as the annual number of deaths from any cause related to pregnancy or childbirth, these numbers are presented as a range.

For comparison, rates in the United States are

Life expectancy: 78
Infant Mortality Rate: 7
Maternal Mortality Ratio: 24 [20-27]
